Collaborator Spotlight: Educating for the Future with SubjectToClimate

SubjectToClimate envisions a future in which every child becomes a steward of our shared planet. To achieve that goal, they are dedicated to creating engaging science resources that empower educators to easily and effectively teach about climate change, justice, and action. Topics include renewable energy, sustainable food production, climate change's various effects, and more.

LabXchange is excited to welcome SubjectToClimate as a collaborator and to add their learning resources to our library! Below, hear from Ben Charles, director of partnerships and outreach at SubjectToClimate, to learn more about their content and philosophy.

What does SubjectToClimate do?

We try to make teaching about climate change as easy as possible for teachers. Our organization is mostly made up of former teachers, so we understand their burdens. Our materials are free, scientist-approved, easily searchable, and reduce the burden to implement climate education in your classroom, grades K–12. Teachers can search by standards, and we have lessons and resources for teachers to implement climate into what they are already teaching, instead of making it an additional task.

What's one fun fact that LabXchange users should know about your organization?

We have over 110 different partners, including LabXchange! We’re grateful they include so many of our offerings on their platform.

What motivates you to work in science education?

SubjectToClimate is for teachers of all subjects and grade levels. We believe climate can and should be taught in all classrooms. Science is the subject that teachers are most commonly able to implement climate topics, so we put emphasis on having high-quality and credible science materials. Enhancing science literacy skills in K–12 education will empower the next generation of problem solvers!

Which SubjectToClimate content are you most proud of?

Our Back to School Guide helps teachers start the year off strong with climate education. We also created this Sustainable Development Goals Curriculum Guide that we’re proud of to help teachers implement the SDGs into their classrooms. There are many exemplary SubjectToClimate lessons and units, but this Water Cycle unit stands out to me as a high-quality science unit for middle school students.

[Editor's note: The Water Cycle unit has also been added to the LabXchange library, where it can be included in private classes and custom pathways.]

How can learners and educators best use your content?

By clicking the magnifying glass at the top of our homepage, educators can utilize our universal search to find what they’re looking for across our many offerings. Our materials include lessons, teaching resources, news articles, PD offerings, teacher guides, and more, so using the universal search can help you filter across our site.

What does SubjectToClimate have planned for the future?

We’re exploring how AI can help teachers more easily find and create high-quality standards-aligned climate lessons to save them time and increase impact in the classroom. Our goal is to help educators teach about climate change more often and with greater confidence, ultimately empowering students to take informed action.
